  • Use lukewarm water for cut flowers as there is less oxygen in it, and it helps prevent air bubbles in the stem that will block water uptake. The only exception to this is spring bulb flowers like daffodils and tulips which prefer cold water
  • Make sure that you thoroughly clean your vases as any bacteria that are left inside will kill your flowers.
  • Cut stems at an angle as this gives the stem a bigger area to take up more water, and stops it resting on the bottom of the vase and sealing itself
  • Strip all leaves below the water level as they can’t take in sunlight and oxygen underwater
  • Avoid direct sunlight, heat, or draughts which can wilt your cut flower prematurely
  • Keep your cut flowers away from fruit as this can causes them to wilt faster
  • Remove faded or dead flowers as they occur in order to keep the rest of the flowers healthy
  • Refresh the water regularly and add quality flower food as required

Care for Cut Roses

  • Roses need lots of water and they need it right away so it is best to arrange your flowers as soon as possible and get them into a vase with fresh water.
  • Cut approximately 2cm from each stem while holding it under running water. Always use a sharp pair of scissors or secateurs as anything blunt risks damaging the stems and the flower’s ability to absorb water.
  • The vase you are using needs to be clean and free from bacteria. Wash it with warm soapy water and thoroughly rinse before use.
  • Use the flower food that comes with your bouquet and follow the instructions carefully. Home-made mixtures such as bleach or copper coins are rarely as effective as proper flower food.
  • Leaves, stems or thorns that fall below the water level in your vase once the flowers have been placed in it should be removed as these will cause algae and bacteria to form.
  • Roses prefer lukewarm water rather than cold water as it helps them to absorb nutrients more efficiently.
  • Changing the water every two or three days
  • Once arranged to your liking, keep your bouquet out of direct sunlight and away from cold draughts.
  • If any of the flower heads die, remove them from the bouquet – this will help to keep the rest of the bouquet healthy

Plant Care Tips

  • Most plants prefer to dry out a little between watering, so don’t overdo it. You can kill with kindness!
  • Always water your house plants from below. Stand them in a dish of water until all the water has been taken up and top up their feed regularly to keep them healthy.
  • Remember to use the correct plant food for your particular plant – some varieties require special food.
  • Plants that like high humidity need regular watering, as well as daily misting. Stand them in a saucer of damp pebbles to encourage additional localized humidity.
  • Give broad glossy leaves an occasional wipe with a cloth to help them breathe.
  • Pinching out the tips of some houseplants can encourage them to grow bushier; keeping flowering plants slightly pot-bound makes them flower more.
  • Avoid strong heat or chilly draughts. Many houseplants like to be outdoors in summer – check all frosts are over first.
  • Check your plants regularly for signs of stress, pests or disease. Remove dead leaves and flowers as they occur.

Flower facts on relationships and giving

When you receive flowers, the doors of your heart swing open. When you give flowers, doors swing open in response. Expressing love and kindness through flowers – to a friend, family member or lover – is faster and less complicated than words and communicates so much about you, too. Research proves, as I always believed, that flower givers are thought of as caring and loving people who appreciate beauty – Christine Arylo, author of Choosing ME Before WE

Flowers and Personalities

With the hundreds of sizes, shapes and colours flowers come in, floral designs are one of the easiest gifts to customize. When it comes to gift giving, carefully selecting the flower varieties and colours you send will result in thoughtful, customized gifts people appreciate and like to receive.
The first step is to consider the preferences of the person who is receiving the gift. For instance:

  • What colours does she like?
  • Consider the likes and dislikes of the recipient. Would they like a bouquet of flowers or an arrangement or maybe a plant?
  • Do they have a favourite type of flower?
  • Do they like flowering plants or a plant they can later transfer to their garden?
  • What are his or her hobbies?
  • What is the message you would like to convey?
  • If you always give flowers on certain occasions, try giving something different each time. With the wide variety of flowers and plants available you should never run out of choices. Remember, sometimes the best reason to give flowers is for no reason at all.

Learn about the floral personality of someone you love. Some of the Floral Signatures include:

  • Natural – People who are casual, earthy and prefer the outdoors. Flowering or green plants, meadow flowers and woodsy accents suit this personality best.
  • Romantic – People who are generous, spontaneous and extravagant. Bouquets of soft colours, light fragrances and accents of lace or ribbon might suit romantics.
  • Expressive – Individuals who seek personal betterment and are attracted to the unconventional – from new age to the arts. Exotic flowers and unusual combinations of shape colour and texture will match their creativity and artistic bent.
  • Traditional – People who are trustworthy, family oriented and prefer classic styles. They appreciate lush arrangements with a great variety of flowers.
  • Contemporary – Individuals who are cutting-edge trendsetters and enjoy living in the moment. Vogue styles such as monochromatic bouquets or arrangements with a few, large vibrant flowers are favourites.

Finally, consult with Flowerite, your florist, who can help you create just the right gift, as well as explain the assortment of possibilities available.

Sending Flowers to a Man

Men love to get flowers for the same reason they send them – to be recognized. Everyone likes to feel special. A good indicator of when it might be appropriate to send flowers would be to consider his favourite occasions for sending them. Does he send flowers for birthdays, or perhaps as a thank you? Don’t forget that no reason is often the best reason!

Just as women love receiving flowers for no reason at all, a surprise floral gift will surely catch his attention too.

The Best Designs and Colours for Men

  • Men are stimulated by colour and are visually oriented. Research shows that men prefer vivid colours such as yellow, orange and red.
  • Flower arrangements that are contemporary, linear styles or natural styles are best. Other favourites might include green or flowering plants.
  • Tell your florist that you want flowers for a man and ask for specific suggestions. If your recipient has a hobby, perhaps you could highlight that. For example, if he is a golfer, tuck in a box of golf balls. If he is into cars, add an auto magazine or two. Flowerite can offer creative suggestions for flowers that are suitable.
